Gunna has responded to allegations of betraying Young Thug and YSL in his latest collaboration with Offset. The track, titled "Style Rare," was released on Friday, June 28, and sees Gunna addressing the rumors head-on.
In the opening lines of his verse, Gunna raps, "Won't trade my team, I could never be a traitor/ Like Raiders, we ball, never thought they would raid us." This response comes amidst accusations that his plea deal in the YSL RICO case compromised his loyalty to Young Thug.
Back in December 2022, Gunna was released from prison after accepting a plea deal. According to WSB-TV, the Atlanta rapper, whose real name is Sergio Kitchens, pleaded guilty to a racketeering conspiracy charge during a virtual court hearing on December 14. His legal team entered an Alford plea, meaning Gunna maintained his innocence but acknowledged that pleading guilty was in his best interest for gaining freedom.
Gunna's sentence was set at five years, with one year served in prison and the remaining four years suspended. Instead, he will complete 500 hours of community service.
Since his release, Gunna has faced criticism from former collaborator Lil Baby, who has publicly disapproved of those who took plea deals in the YSL case. Lil Baby seemingly took shots at Gunna in an unreleased song, rapping, "Pussy n-ggas taking pleas/ I know Slime ain’t happy." Additionally, during a concert, Lil Baby told the DJ to "turn this shit off" when Gunna's "Drip Too Hard" played.
Despite the backlash, Gunna maintains that there is no animosity between him and Young Thug. In an April interview with XXL, Gunna said, "It’s the same. It’s love, always. Our relationship is our relationship."
However, Young Thug, who is currently on trial in the YSL RICO case, recently posted on social media, seemingly siding with Lil Baby over Gunna. From jail, Thugger wrote, "whateva wham say goes," referring to Lil Baby's nickname.
As Gunna's new song "Style Rare" hits the airwaves, it remains to be seen how this latest declaration will affect his standing within the hip-hop community and his relationship with YSL.
