The retrial for rapper YNW Melly's double-murder case has been set for September 10, 2025. This announcement was made by Judge Martin Fein during a hearing in Broward County court on Monday, July 8. The trial will start at 9 a.m.
YNW Melly, whose real name is Jamell Demons, is accused of killing his childhood friends, Chris "YNW Juvy" Thomas and Anthony "YNW Sakchaser" Williams, in 2018. The first trial ended in a mistrial last summer. Melly allegedly tried to stage the murders to look like a drive-by shooting.
Besides the double-murder charges, Melly is also facing a witness tampering case. A pretrial meeting for this case is scheduled for December 5, 2024. Melly's lawyer, Raven Liberty, mentioned that the trial date could change based on a pending court ruling about some text messages.
Melly's mother, Jamie Demons-King, addressed the new trial date on Instagram, expressing their trust in God and hope for a positive outcome.
The retrial was initially supposed to start on October 9, 2023, but got delayed due to additional witness tampering charges. These charges involve YNW Bortlen and an inmate named Terrence Mathis, who allegedly tried to stop Melly’s ex-girlfriend from testifying.
YNW Melly is still in prison as these legal issues continue. His legal team is working to exclude certain calls from being used as evidence in the trial.
