Using contemporary pop and R&B frameworks, the Ghanaian singer-songwriter King Promise, real name Gregory Bortey Newman, builds on the success of his 2019 debut, As Promised, by inventively rewriting highlife and hiplife styles. Half of the songs on 5 Star's album, which span British drill, Dutch and Nigerian Afropop, and American hip-hop, are strengthened by the guest appearances, but the other half showcase King Promise as a potent soloist.
His second album, 5 Star, which features 15 tracks and features WSTRN, Omah Lay, Vic Mensa, Headie One, and Bisa Kdei, was also recorded amid periods of deep introspection and comfort.
