NEWS: Afro Nation Portugal announces 2023 dates

The organisers of Afro Nation Portugal on Monday announced that the 2023 edition will take place from 28 to 30 June.

The world’s biggest Afrobeats festival, the event makes a return to Praia da Rocha Beach, Portimao, which drew over 35 000 fans from 134 different countries this year.

Like previous years Afro Nation Portugal 2023 will feature multiple festival stages, bringing together top artists across Afrobeats, amapiano and Afro-house as well as hip hop, R&B and dancehall, among others. An impressive raft of headliners including WizkidDavido and Burna Boy all mounted the Afro Nation Portugal stage in June, alongside Chris Brown and Megan Thee Stallion, Beenie Man and Popcaan, among others.

Organisers say the programme celebrates music from the entire African diaspora and is one of a number of events that are helping to bring African music to new fans all over the world.

“Afro Nation Portugal really felt like the culmination of everything we’ve been working towards, and managed to exceed everyone’s expectations yet again,” a statement reads. “We can’t wait to take everything up another level again in 2023 and bring everyone together on the beach for an unforgettable celebration of music and unity.”

Meanwhile, Monday’s announcement also saw the release of a documentary revisiting Afro Nation 2022, featuring performances from the showcasing acts and offering patrons a foretaste of next year’s event.

Before heading back to Europe, Afro Nation will be held in Ghana at Marine Drive in Accra on 29 and 30 December, with amapiano stars Major League DJz, Uncle Waffles and Kamo Mphela as well as DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small’s collaborative project Scorpion Kings on the bill. Other performing acts include Nigerian stars DavidoP-SquareRema and Adekunle Gold. Ghanaian artist Stonebwoy will make a special guest appearance.

“Afro Nation’s aim has always been to elevate the scene and artists from or inspired by the modern sounds of Africa, and by establishing this stage in Ghana and bringing the exact same high production value from Portugal to West Africa, it is just one step towards a bright new future of live events in the region,” organisers said.
