The Met Gala, one of the most highly anticipated events in the fashion world, returned on May 1, 2023, after a year-long hiatus due to the pandemic. The theme of this year’s Met Gala, “In honor of Karl,” paid tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld, the iconic creative director of Chanel. As always, the event was held at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, and it saw some of the biggest names in entertainment and fashion strut their stuff on the red carpet.
Guests at the 2023 Met Gala included Rihanna, Doja Cat, Lil Nas X, Billie Eilish, Bad Bunny, Janelle Monáe, Cardi B, A$AP Rocky, Usher, David Byrne, Phoebe Bridgers, Mary J. Blige, Ice Spice, Pusha T, FKA twigs, Olivia Rodrigo, Diddy, Teyana Taylor, Dr. Dre, Maluma, Labrinth, Jack Harlow, Angèle, Blackpink’s Jennie Kim, Skepta, Jennifer Lopez, Kim Petras, Anitta, and many more. The star-studded event was co-chaired by Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz, Roger Federer, Dua Lipa, and Anna Wintour.
One of the highlights of the event was the extravagant and outlandish outfits worn by the celebrities. Erykah Badu, known for her bold fashion choices, did not disappoint with her head-to-toe gold outfit, complete with a dramatic train and matching headpiece. Janelle Monáe also made a statement with her black and white ensemble, featuring a high-necked bodice, a full skirt, and a cape that billowed behind her as she walked.
Doja Cat, one of the breakout stars of the past year, dazzled in a sparkling silver gown with a thigh-high slit and long train. Dua Lipa, another rising star in the music world, chose a daring outfit consisting of a red corset, a sheer skirt, and thigh-high boots. FKA twigs, known for her avant-garde style, opted for a black and white ensemble with a feathered headpiece.
On the men’s side, A$AP Rocky turned heads in a black suit with a massive bow tie and silver embellishments. David Byrne, the legendary musician and former Talking Heads frontman, sported an eye-catching white suit with a black top hat. Usher looked dapper in a black and white ensemble with a long coat and matching fedora.
Other notable outfits from the event included Cardi B’s beaded gown with a massive train, Billie Eilish’s oversized black and green suit, and Lil Nas X’s intricate gold armor-inspired outfit.
In addition to the fashion, the event also celebrated the exhibition “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” which showcased the late designer’s iconic work. The Met Gala is not only a celebration of fashion and style but also serves as a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.
