The University of Ghana has cancelled Shatta Wale's highly anticipated performance at the Reunion Rave in Legon, originally scheduled for June 8th, citing a "breach of directives" by the event organizers.
The decision, announced by the University's Dean of Students' office, has sparked heated debate and finger-pointing on social media. The cancellation comes amidst a pre-existing rivalry between Shatta Wale and fellow Ghanaian dancehall artist Stonebwoy, whose concert at Limann Hall remains unaffected.
According to a letter from the Dean of Students' office, the cancellation was due to a violation of event guidelines. Permission had been granted for a "TWO-DAY ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT" event, which included a specific list of approved activities. Organizers from James Topp Nelson Yankah Hall are accused of adding the unapproved "Reunion Rave or Artiste Night" to the schedule.
"The Reunion Rave or the Artiste Night was not part of the program outline submitted by the JCR to the Office for approval, therefore the Reunion Rave or the Artiste Night has been cancelled with immediate effect," stated the letter. It also warned of "severe sanctions" for any further breaches.
Fans of Stonebwoy have taken to social media to celebrate the cancellation, speculating that it reflects Shatta Wale's inability to compete with Stonebwoy's popularity. Meanwhile, Shatta Wale's supporters claim foul play, alleging that Stonebwoy's camp is spreading misinformation to damage Shatta Wale's reputation and promote their own concert.
The Dean of Students' office emphasized that any deviation from the approved program would not be tolerated, underscoring the importance of adhering to university guidelines to avoid such controversies in the future.
