Ghanaian musician Maradona Adjei Yeboah, popularly known as Guru, has emerged victorious in the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (SRC) presidential election. Guru, along with his running mate Jeffery Adu-Yeboah, won with 50.7% of the votes, totaling 9,455 out of 18,659 cast.
The election was marked by significant hurdles, including legal challenges and disqualifications. Initially, Guru faced disqualification on the grounds of being a non-resident student, which led to a legal battle over his eligibility. The SRC argued that Guru and another candidate did not meet the necessary requirements to run for office. However, the Appeals Board reversed this decision last week, allowing Guru to compete.
Following this ruling, the Vice Dean instructed the inclusion of Guru and the other candidate's names in the final list of candidates. The Electoral Commission was tasked with organizing the balloting process, which took place on September 16, 2024.
With the election concluded, Guru and his team are set to lead the SRC for the 2024/25 academic year.
