In a significant move, LVMH announced on Monday, September 30, 2024, the sale of Off-White, the influential streetwear brand founded by the late Virgil Abloh, to Bluestar Alliance LLC, a New York-based brand management company. The announcement coincided with what would have been Abloh’s 44th birthday, paying tribute to the designer who passed away in 2021.
LVMH, which acquired a 60% stake in Off-White in 2021, revealed that the brand had struggled to regain the same cultural impact it held under Abloh's leadership. Despite this, Off-White remains a notable name in the fashion industry, and its future direction now rests in the hands of Bluestar Alliance, a company known for managing brands such as Hurley, Scotch & Soda, Bebe, and Elie Tahari.
Joey Gabbay, CEO of Bluestar Alliance, expressed his admiration for Abloh's legacy in a statement: “Virgil was a creative pioneer who had a profound impact on the global fashion industry and creative community. Acquiring Off-White represents a unique opportunity for Bluestar Alliance to honor and build upon the enduring legacy of Virgil Abloh.” Gabbay emphasized Bluestar’s commitment to continuing the cultural momentum Abloh sparked, particularly his ability to merge street culture with high fashion.
The terms of the transaction have not been disclosed, but the sale marks a new chapter for Off-White, which remains under a licensing agreement with New Guards Group until 2026. Bluestar Alliance plans to strategically invest and expand Off-White’s presence globally, while preserving the creative essence that Abloh imbued in the brand.
LVMH stated its pride in Off-White’s legacy and affirmed that Bluestar Alliance is the right partner to carry the brand forward. Abloh, who was also the creative director for Louis Vuitton’s menswear under LVMH, passed away in November 2021 after battling a rare form of cancer, but his influence on the fashion world endures.
With this acquisition, Bluestar Alliance aims to build on Abloh’s vision and strengthen Off-White’s global appeal, adding the brand to its diverse portfolio.
This transition marks a poignant moment in fashion, as Off-White embarks on a new era, while honoring the trailblazing creativity of its iconic founder.
