Wayne Lewis, cofounder and longtime member of the iconic R&B group Atlantic Starr, has passed away at the age of 68. The news was confirmed in a Facebook post shared by the band on Friday, stating that Lewis died on Thursday. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
In their statement, the group requested privacy for Lewis's family during this difficult time, while expressing their sorrow over the loss of a beloved bandmate and friend.
Wayne Lewis helped form Atlantic Starr in the mid-1970s, alongside seven others including his brothers, David and Jonathan Lewis. Originally hailing from New York, the group later moved to Los Angeles in pursuit of musical stardom.
Atlantic Starr rose to prominence during the 1980s with a string of R&B hits that became staples of the genre, including "Always," "Secret Lovers," "Am I Dreaming?" and "Let’s Get Closer." Their 1987 album All in the Name of Loveachieved platinum status in the United States, cementing their place in R&B history.
Though their later albums did not match the commercial success of their earlier work, Atlantic Starr remained a cherished name in music. The group, currently composed of Melessa Pierce, Shammah Carter, and Jonathan Lewis, had a series of performances scheduled in the coming weeks. It remains unclear whether those performances will proceed in the wake of Wayne’s passing.
Wayne Lewis leaves behind a lasting legacy of soulful music, heartfelt lyrics, and timeless melodies that touched fans across generations.
May he rest in peace.
