Tributes have poured in from across the world following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight individuals, including top government officials, in Ghana on Wednesday, August 6.
The military Z‑9 helicopter, operated by the Ghana Armed Forces, crashed in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region. All eight people on board were killed, including:
Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah
Environment, Science and Technology Minister Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed
Dr. Samuel Sarpong, vice-chair of the ruling National Democratic Congress
Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, acting deputy national security coordinator
Mr. Samuel Aboagye, Former Parliamentary Candidate (2020 & 2024)
Three Ghana Air Force crew members
The aircraft had departed from Accra on a mission to Obuasi, reportedly linked to the government’s ongoing fight against illegal mining, popularly known as “galamsey.” It went off radar shortly after takeoff, and the wreckage was later discovered in a forested region of Adansi.
The incident has been described as one of Ghana’s most devastating air disasters in recent memory. President John Mahama has declared it a national tragedy, canceling all public engagements and announcing three days of national mourning. Flags across the country are flying at half-mast as investigations begin into the cause of the crash.
As news of the crash spread, celebrities and public figures took to social media to express their grief and solidarity with the Ghanaian people.
Nigerian rapper Ice Prince wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
